A new series of foreign language
classes will be offered starting in January. We expect to offer Arabic, French, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish classes,
as well as Advanced Spanish Conversation and Advanced English Conversation. Current classes now underway include: Beginning Arabic meeting on Thursday
evenings from 4:30 until 6:00 p.m. starting on September 4th through November 20th. The teacher is Dr. Shadia Mahmoud, a native
of Sudan and an experienced Arabic teacher. This class is an introduction to the Arabic language. A second level class
will be offered starting in January 2009. The cost is $50 per person which includes your study materials. Beginning Conversational Spanish
meeting on Wednesdays at noon until 1:30 p.m. starting September 10th through November 26th. The teachers are Dr. Mark
Sills who studied Spanish from the beginner through the Advanced II level at Instituto Profesional de Español Para
Extranjeros in San José, Costa Rica, and Javier García Mendéz, a native of México and an experienced
teacher of Spanish. This class emphasizes spoken Spanish and will introduce a basic vocabulary and verb forms.
The cost is $50 per person which includes your study materials. Citizenship Class Our last citizenship class was a huge success. We had students from a variety of countries including Cuba, Russia,
Mexico, and the Sudan.
The next class will begin on Wednesday, October
29th from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. This 10-week class will cover all of the information needed to pass the newly designed
United States Citizenship exam. The teacher recently became a United States citizen, so she understands exactly what
immigrants and refugees face when going for their final interview and exam.
Those taking this class must be eligible to take the citizenship exam and must be able
to participate in a class that is taught in English.
In order to help us cover the cost of materials used
in this class, we will have to charge a tuition of $10 per person.
To register for this class, please contact Mattie
Williams at 379-0037 extension 4# or email mwilliams@faihouse.org.

Free English Classes for Immigrants
This
year, FaithAction International House will offer several free English Classes in partnership with religious congregations.
Our partners for this year are Iglesia Cristiana Internaciónal de Greensboro (on Monday nights) and Friendship United
Methodist Church in Brown Summit (on Wednesday nights). FaithAction provides a trained English for Speakers of Other
Languages (ESOL) teacher and all study material, and the religious congregation provides the location and free child care
for parents while they are in class. Our ESOL teacher is Ms. Jalissa Brown.
The Language Exchange - A Volunteer Program The
Language Exchange is a volunteer peer-to-peer program that matches a native English speaker who wishes to improve his or her
foreign language skills with a native speaker of another language who wishes to improve his or her English skills. After
a brief orientation training, the partners contract to meet weekly for 2 hours at a neutral location. For one hour,
the partners converse in English. During the second hour, they converse in the foreign language. With no cost
to either volunteer, both receive significant practice in each other's language, increasing their capacity to communicate
across cultures. In addition, the partners tend to form a long-lasting friendship that significantly enriches their
lives. This is part of the FaithAction International House mission to "form a united community of many cultures." To learn more about the Language Exchange, or to get on our contact list
for future orientation sessions, please contact Rebecca Burrell at 336-379-0037 extension 1#.
