Stories from Our Work

The call came from Moses Cone Hospital. Last night a patient was admitted.  A Muslim immigrant from Africa, he was in a terrible mental state.  He had just learned that 12 members of his family had been killed.  More than anything, he needed someone he could trust, a person who spoke his language and shared his faith, who could help him get through this horrible time in his life.  Because of your support we were able to help!

She was critically injured in an accident, but somehow survived.
One of her young daughters was also injured, thankfully only a broken bone.  She is the sole support for her three children.  Now, she will be wheel chair bound for three or four months as she recovers from her injuries.  Her employer says she is such a good employee, he is saving her job until she is able to return to work.  But right now, she has no income.  The rent, the utilities, the need for food and medicine, the clothes for her children to go back to school at the end of summer….all of these costs continue.  Because of your support we were able to help!

He was nearly killed in a wreck in California while visiting his elderly mother.  After months of surgeries and physical therapy, he is well enough to travel back to his home in Greensboro.  He still needs a hospital bed, and transportation to medical appointments in a wheel chair.  Of course, he lost his job due to the accident.  His wife has been doing her best to provide for their three children.  Just a month ago, their teen-aged son was also in an auto accident and was killed.  Now he is coming home.  Without insurance, and with no employment, how will this family provide the hospital bed and wheel chair he will have to have?  How will they manage to hold on until he recovers?  Because of your support we were able to help!

They just arrived in Greensboro from a refugee camp in Africa. They have only a few items of clothing and a few personal effects, and nothing more to their name.  Their resettlement sponsors have very limited funding, just enough to provide a few weeks rent in a low-cost apartment, along with some donated furniture.  What will they use to prepare meals?  How will they afford to buy food while looking for a job?  When summer is over, what will they use to keep warm on cold nights?  Because of your support we were able to help!

He had worked so hard, but an injury on the job left him totally disabled. To add insult to injury, his employer tried to avoid filing a worker’s comp claim.  Unable to work, completely broke, and with all his family in Mexico, all he wanted was a fair settlement and a way to return to his family to live out his life in peace.  What was he to do?  Because of your support we were able to help!

These are just a few of the cases that have been served at our Immigrant Assistance Center so far this summer.  Your support for our work allows us to find solutions for situations like these!  Every one of these cases has a happy ending, thanks to individuals and religious congregations who support our work.
