Stories from Our Work
“My husband and I have experienced discrimination in this country and for many immigrants each day the situation just gets worse. We want our children to not be afraid and to have the same opportunities as everyone else. Thanks to FaithAction we’ve had the opportunity to go to Washington and to participate in other events to support immigration reform.” – Gladys, from Mexico
“I wanted to learn English to be independent here in America. We can live here without English, but we cannot live with independence. FaithAction has been a great resource for me. I have been working with a volunteer tutor, Paul, and have been able to learn and improve my English a lot. I have improved my grammar, reading, writing and most importantly speaking and listening. That is what Paul and FaithAction have taught me – how to talk to people. Now I feel I can go somewhere.” – Muna from Nepal
“I really enjoyed participating in the Movies Without Borders class. I’ve lived in Greensboro for 14 years and I really enjoyed learning how to make movies. The class helps prepare people to live well in the community. It’s so important to not leave immigrants behind, but to support their efforts to better their lives. Otherwise the whole community suffers. As for me, the class was a chance to get out of the house and to find people to laugh and talk with, and to tell my story about the importance of education for girls. I’m grateful for the chance.” – Mariama from Ghana
“After being injured on the job, and being left permanently disabled, my company fired me to avoid paying a worker’s compensation claim. With FaithAction’s support and encouragement, I was able to push for a fair and just settlement. Now I have enough money to return to my home in Mexico.” – Gregorio from Mexico
“Claudia and I have met about once a week since last October to improve our language skills through conversation. I need to speak Spanish at my job, and our regular meetings have improved my confidence and over all language skills.” – Kat, an American paired with Claudia from Mexico in FaithAction’s Language Exchange
“I have been able to improve my fluency, pronunciation, and I’ve made a great friend. Through my relationship with Kat, my children received scholarships to go to the Edible Schoolyard Summer Camp, and we are working together now on the Children’s Museum’s Culture of Color project on Mexican culture and history.” – Claudia from Mexico
